Social Media and Mobile Apps

Smart phones and tablets have become one of the most popular mediums for staying connected. This has been possible with the development of various types of apps for these devices. Some of the popular apps that can aid you with your PLN are Twitter, Pinterest, Podcasts/Podcasts Republic, Flipboard, Diigo and Easy PD.

You saw in one of the video lectures how Twitter can be used to follow thoughtful leaders. When used effectively, Twitter can also be used to actively take part in sharing and building ideas. Example Activity: Let’s do an example activity where everyone in this MOOC can take part in sharing and building ideas using Twitter. Share your thoughts and ideas about the Personal Learning Space (PLS) you discovered this week using the hashtag #CUINTWEET. You can use hashtags in your tweet, your Facebook posts and blogs. For example...

I never thought about Librarians for PLN but I know better now #CUINTWEET

Here are some important things about Twitter hashtags:

  • Clicking on a hashtagged word in any Twitter message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword
  • Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet – at the beginning, middle, or end.
  • Hashtagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics.
  • If you Tweet with a hashtag on a public account, anyone who does a search for that hashtag may find your Tweet.
  • Don't #spam #with #hashtags. Don't over-tag a single Tweet (no more than 2 hashtags per Tweet).
  • Use hashtags only on Tweets relevant to the topic.

Some of the popular hashtags for teachers and educators:

  • #edtech
  • #web20
  • #flipclass
  • #edchat
  • #EdApps
  • #k12
